"Portland State of Mind" By: Seth Crockett This was the music video that I made for WJBQ 97.9’s morning show. I was given a song written by Seth Crockett, and from there, went about using a look similar to the Jay Z video for “Empire State of Mind”. It took a few months to get all of the necessary photos and footage, however, all of the work involved really makes the video stand out. This was made using a combination of positioned cells on layered tracks, and live footage taken around town.  

  Stylized End Credits This is cut from the end of the Vivid Motion Production, “Choices” This particular show featured a lot of intense drama, with a somber, yet open ending that could lead to worse outcomes, or new beginnings. I wanted the visuals in the credits to reflect the feeling that the show finished with, and also to give each of the dancers their own little moment in the lime light. The effect I created ended up excelling my own expectations, and has since become a favorite of mine.

"GHOSTS" This is a music video that I made for the song "Ghosts" by: Olivia Cornell & the Precious, a local band out of Portland, ME. Staring in this feature is Briana Wiley, making her final appearance in front of the camera, for the time being any way. It was shot at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland, and was made on a budget of about 3.99 plus tax. The song can be found on the album "Filthy Things", which can be purchased at CDBaby.com.

PORTLAND VICE: This was a personal project that I had been meaning to do for years. In this throw-back homage to the ever popular and stylish 80's TV Cop Drama, Miami Vice, we see the fast paced, exciting, and some times dangerous life to be had in the sprawling metropolis that is Portland Maine, U.S.A. Names to note in the Credits... Judd Nelson: This teen heart throb of the 80's was born and raised right here in Portland, it seemed only right to make him the star. Lee Goldberg: One of the most well known faces on local television. This Sports Anchor/Reporter has made quite a name for himself on WCSH 6. Meredith Manning, Jeff Parsons and Lori Voornas: Three of the most well known names in morning radio. These three have gotten their fame on the station WJBQ 97.9 playing all the latest hits, and offering comedic conversation for every one driving to work. They also form a great Rock Band by the name of "Cluster Fudge". Rob Steele: Also on Q97.9, Rob is the popular evening man. Young girls from all over the state call in just to hear the sound of his charmingly hyperactive voice. Rob commonly goes by the nick name "Steelzee". Susan Collins: Susan is the junior U.S. Senator from Maine and a member of the Republican Party. It came down to a toss up as to who to put in this, Susan, or Olympia Snowe. Susan was heads. John Baldacci: He's the Govehnah! What else is there to say?
 

Fear and Loathing on Park Street: This was originally a personal photo project that I shot in 2003 down in Boston, MA. I've always been a bit obsessed with the stylings of Hunter S. Thompson, and my friend, Jon, was always a devotee to the same bi-polar anger about the American Judicial system that drove Oscar Z. Acosta. It only made sense that we document a bit of trouble making together in a vast public domain some time. A few months ago, I came across the photo collection again, and decided to put together an appropriate video compilation using the images, some of which I have cut, masked, and added some slightly trippy visuals to. Yes, that is former president Richard Nixon floating by in the reflection on our 3D glasses. I felt that the most appropriate tune to set the whole thing to, due to it’s content, would be “Learning to Fly” by Buffalo Springfield. I have done similar, less trippy photo to video projects for clients that have had me include photo documentation with their shows and weddings.

University of Cincinnati Community Design Center Intro: This is the introduction to a documentary video that I pieced together for the University of Cincinnati Community Design Center. I was given a flash drive full of footage taken on a regular digital camera, and asked to put together a short presentation that they could show to new students. Standard editing with music insertion, followed by a little presentation sparkle at the end utilizing Particle Illusion 3.0.

DVD Menu Screen/ Compositing from Still and Live Images: This is a Menu screen I made for the DVD copies of Vivid Motion's 2008 Holiday Burlesque show that I made specifically for the dancers who were in it. I was going for a good ol’ fashioned, warm Holiday theme, with just a hint of naughtiness. Essentially what the show was all about. I was staring at this photograph of the tree and fireplace and glanced over to see one of my wife’s bras hanging from the door knob to the computer room, and inspiration struck me. Note: This is not intended as a tutorial of any kind, I just threw in examples of what I was doing to make the video.  

DVD Menu Screen 2 / Blending colors in stills and live video: This was a menu screen I did for the DVD of the Vivid Motion Dance of War show. Using some color blending and a small amount of blur, I was able to perch a castle onto a cliff overlooking the Maine coast. The way I came up with this one was all about the timing of the idea. I had just completed the actual video of the performance, and had absolutely no idea what to use for the menu screen. I didn’t want to go with a static image, but at the same time, I didn’t want to use any thing from the show itself. While I was cycling through old Arthurian paintings to lay in the back ground of the closing titles sequence, I came across one of the castle by the edge of with water with Merlin’s cave below. I knew an area that was some what comparable to that. I looked out of my window to see storm clouds brewing, so I grabbed my equipment and rushed out the door. I arrived just in time to get the shot of the water with the troubled clouds sweeping over head before the rain started coming down in what would prove to be a whole month of non stop wet weather. The castle I used was located in Scotland, as I just couldn’t find a good photo of a decent British Castle. I experimented with a few, and wanted to use the famed Pendragon ruins, but they ended up just looking like a pile of bricks on the cliff. For fantasy’s sake, it all worked out pretty well. The music in the back ground is a group known as The Mediaeval Baebes.  

Stop Motion Animation “Louderhosen” Here are some examples of what I can do with simple animation. This video features a photograph of a friend of mine attached to an animated poly-resin body that I had sculpted. Silly though this clip is, it actually did serve an important purpose. A company that I was working for at the time was having an Oktoberfest themed event which highlighted the business progress over the last 6 months, and wanted an entertaining way of presenting the information. (Understandably, I have removed all traces of the company's logo and stat numbers for reasons of confidentiality.) The presentation was a huge success, and the character was an instant hit with co-workers and management. This piece, along with it's unseen counterparts, were created and completed in about a week. Imagine what I could come up with in two?

  The 2009 Maine Comics Arts Festival Intro: Here is the intro that I had made for the segments covering the 2009, first annual, Maine Comics Arts Festival. It is a fast paced, snappy example of what I can do when making clips for introductions and title sequences. These same abilities are invaluable in the world of advertising.

The Dance of War Intro: The opening of this show presented by Vivid Motion featured a red lit screen before the dancers came out. This was meant to represent fire and chaos in the time before Uther Pendragon came around. For the DVD, I filled in the stage with what the red lights were meant to represent while the credits flashed by. This was done using layer upon layer of flame and burning ember footage set on black and then super imposed over the stage near the end. Just a bit of flare for the intro and opening credits.

“The Younger Brother”: This was edited using nothing more than Windows Movie Maker, and I believe that was the last time I ever played with the program. The story behind this one... My sibling, Dugan, was back visiting from college out in Ohio and came to spend a day with me. Dugan is a very well known young man about the City of Portland, and it is always fun to spend a day there walking around with him. So that was exactly what I did. Followed him for a day and shot him in all of the places that we wandered to. Since he and I are both big fans of ‘40s and ‘50s pop culture nostalgia, “The Object” by MC Honky seemed the only logical choice for me to edit the whole thing to. This is just a fine example of controlled chaos on both our parts. When I have an actual story outline of some sort, I am very fond of making music videos.
