A promo I made for the good people at Coast City Comics to promote the national Free Comic Book Day event. For the theme, I was thinking monster truck rally to match the tastes of the store owner. I used a chroma isolation technique that only allows certain colors to be seen in certain shots. Namely Green and Orange tones, the official colors of the store.

The Atomic Trash! "Spring Fling" show

 

I made this promo for a pair of Portland Dance performers who regularly put on shows at Geno’s Rock Club. We spent a morning having all of the performers dance around in front of my green screen right there at the club, which I then pieced together into a collage spanning multiple areas.

Anti-Brian Brinegar Campaign "The Big One"

5 time winner of Portland Phoenix's Best Portland Comic award, Brian Brinegar, asked me to make a series of campaign ads for the 2011 nomination. The gimmick to this campaign however, was going against his winning. Having won several times over, he decided to make a series of ads convincing the public to vote for some one else. This was the final piece in a series of mock slander ads, depicting the comedian as an evil, corruptive and destructive force. The joke being that these shots were obviously just taken from one of his standup acts and cut out to make it look as though he were destroying all of humanity. The ads got a lot of laughs, and not surprisingly, actually worked.

Here are a few promos that I put together for the Coast City Comics store when they first opened back in June of '09. All of them were shot before I switched to HD, but the effects are none the less, eye catching and comedic.

“ACTION CHAD!” This promo was based on, and stars an employee of the store who I met there on opening day. His employee badge presented his name with a spiky explosion around it, and I started joking with him about how rare it is to see a name like Chad in a big explosive format. Thus, the character of Action Chad was born. This promo became an instant favorite of the two store owners, who have since dubbed Chad as their own official celebrity.

“Prevalent” The shop that shares the same space as Coast City Comics, aptly named Fun Box Monster Emporium, has a vast collection of toys and creatures from days gone by. I simply HAD to take the opportunity to utilize some of the trinkets being sold there. The idea was simple and came right to me. What would each of these characters be reading if they wandered into their neighboring shop. So my tech assistant and I gathered up a box load of the toys, and a handful of comic books, then proceeded to stand them up and take shots of them with correspondingly appropriate graphic novels. The music came from Confusatron, a local band that the shop owners are both very fond of.

  “Captivating” This promo had originally played out a bit differently. It ended with me (yes that’s me staring at the toy) shouting “Quit Lookin’ at Me!”. After review however, the store co-owner, Gerald, expressed his favorability to exploding heads rather than verbal retort. I did, with great pleasure on my part, indulge him in his pursuit of cranial fulmination. The glowing eyes were done using a masking and blurring technique that was taught to me by a brilliant amateur film maker in the U.K. Combine this with the famed “Hall of the Mountain King”, and you have a recipe for mayhem my friends.

“Lucid” There’s little I can say about this one that the guy in the cardboard mask hasn’t. The theme of this one is very much Kenny from South Park. I’ve always loved when that character goes into extreme detail about something, and only the characters in the show seem to be able to make out every word of his mumbling. I figured this, combined with a wild array of images depicting what the store offered really gave a good overview to the business.

“Hawt” Another one with me some how getting utterly, physically annihilated in front of the store owner. This one was meant to appeal to the hard core graphic novel fan base, as the illustrated character mentioned is famed as being one of some extraordinary salacious allure.
